Meet Walter P. Fontenot
Walter was born here in Liberty
County, and graduated high school,
Valedictorian of his class, at Carter G.
Woodson in 1964. He was awarded a
full four year Ford Foundation
scholarship and attended Texas
Southern University and graduated in
May, 1968.
Upon graduation, Walter volunteered for
service in the US Navy as an enlisted man
and completed his basic training in Great
Lakes, Illinois. Then he served at
Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico until he was
selected to attend the Naval Officer
Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island
in November, 1968. Following graduation,
in April, 1969, he was commissioned
Ensign-USNR. His first duty station was
aboard the USS Kittyhawk CVA63, a super
carrier. Between 1970 and 1971, that tour
was spent in the Gulf of Tonkin, South
China Sea as an Engineering Officer,
At the end of his first tour at sea, Walter
was next stationed in-country Vietnam
where he split his tour between Camranh
Bay and Saigon with the Naval Advisory
Group, serving as a Command Evaluator,
COC Watch Officer in the Republic of
Vietnam in 1972. At the end of this tour, he
was sent back to the States and served as
a Recruiting Officer in Albuquerque, New
Mexico until he was honorably discharged
in September, 1974.

Walter is a man of the people who has served this
County with an able and competent hand. His
grasp of the needs of the people is admirable.
With compassion, sincerity and grace, he has
worked for and represented Liberty County with
distinction for all these years. He is never too
busy to help someone and he is always available
if you need him! He will meet you after 5:00pm, on
Saturday, Sunday…he understands the needs of
the working man and woman. If elected, Walter
intends to carry those same ideals with him onto
the bench.
As his time in the Navy grew short, the young Lieutenant
decided to apply for Law School. He was accepted right out
of the Navy to the University of Texas Law School, from
which he graduated in May, 1977. That was the year Walter
returned to Liberty County. He worked in the Law Firm of
Zbranek & Hight for six years before venturing out and
establishing his own firm in 1984. The rest is history…
For 36 years, Walter has made the people of Liberty County
his family. He has faithfully represented their interests in
moments of need and treated all with generosity and
respect. This Community has been good to Walter and in his
own way, he feels it’s time to give back! With his
experience and education, Walter is skilled and
knowledgeable regarding the various aspects of the law
and the Justice System… but he is so much more than that.
